The beautiful beaches in St Maarten have something for everyone, including those who would prefer to do nothing at all. All of the 37 white sandy beaches are public, and offer a wide variety of scenery, activities and amenities. Some are more private and romantic, some have waves high enough for great surfing and some have calmer waters for families and children. Because there are so many options to choose from, it’s easy to plan your day according to the kind of experience you would like to have while on vacation in the Caribbean.
If you’re looking for a beach closer to The Summit, then your best option is Mullet Bay which is within walking distance of the hotel and arguably one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Mullet Bay is a picturesque aqua blue water beach that is flat and wide and especially liked by surfers and sunbathers. You also have the clothing optional beach of Cupecoy where you can rent chairs, umbrellas or order up a glass of Dannys’ favorite rhum punch.
One of the largest and most popular beaches in St Maarten is the Great Bay beach, which was enlarged by sand displaced during construction of a ship pier. It is now one of the longest and widest beaches on the island and has a boardwalk where parties regularly take place. It is also conveniently located on along Philipsburg the main shopping area and the capital of Dutch side.
For a quieter time, the best option is Friar’s Bay, a small cove on the French side of the island. Being on the westward side of the island, the Caribbean Sea, the bay is well-protected from wind and generally has smooth, easily swimmable water that is free of waves. Happy Bay, even more secluded, can be accessed by a hiking trail which begins at the northern end of Friar’s Bay.
A snack in-between activity or relaxation sessions can really make an afternoon at the beach perfect. Fortunately, almost all of the beaches in St Maarten have grills nearby to satisfy your hunger and a few have sit-down restaurants ranging from beach bars to serious establishments.
A wonderful end to a beach day is to just sit and watch the sun set behind the golden waters of the Caribbean Sea, or watch the full moon rise over the Atlantic side of the island. Both sides of the island host full moon parties on the beach that extend way into the early hours of the morning. A glass of wine with your toes in the sand is a perfect way to end a great day.
