St. Maarten's Day, a Favorite Island Holiday
Although Christopher Columbus is primarily credited with discovering America, he also discovered the island of St. Martin/St. Maarten on his second voyage to the New World. Because he sighted the island on November 11, 1493, the feast day of Saint Martin of Tours, he named the island after him. This name has since been translated to Sint Maarten (Dutch) and Saint-Martin (French).
St. Maarten's Day is November 11th every year and marked by the closing of businesses, the ringing of church bells and island-wide celebrations. Other countries who celebrate this holiday include Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Croatia, Slovenia, Denmark, Poland and many others.
